30 years ago today

I was awakened by a large bang.  Normally I would have been up at that time of the morning but was out partying the night before and didn't hit the hay till the early hours of dawn.....But that's not the story we are here to talk about.  Anyone know what happened on this day?  Mount St. Helens blew her top.  The majestic lady lies about 200 miles due south of us.  They say the ash was shot up 15 miles into the air. The area around the mountain was devastated by the collapse of the northern flank of the mountain in what amounted to one of the largest landslides ever recorded, which buried 24 square miles of land under as much as 600 feet of debris. For years afterward the ash is still visible as you drive down the I-5 corridor.

It's one of those days that you totally remember where you were and what you were doing that day and will remember the rest of your life...

I dedicate this blog to Stonegirl lol

  1. Yep - even across the country it was a major event....and when I got to see the mountain a few years ago - the devastation was still pretty overwhelming. Don't you live in a place that could blow any minute?

  2. Yup, I was still in Minnesota. I remember it well. But not as close as it is here. I can see Mt. St. Helen's from Portland on a clear day. I worry about Mt Hood!!! It had a minor eruption this week, and that is scary...that's only 40 miles away from here!!! Mt. St. Helen's is NOT far from here either. I think about 2 hours or so??? I'm not quite sure, but it is directly northwest of here.

  4. OK now I spent entirely too much time reading where people were.....
ON another note, later that same day I was at a softball practice slightly hung over and got a ball square between the eyes...memories :-)
