stupid people

Grrrr. The other day we seen people standing on the coral head down the beach, Yesterday Harry and the kids went snorkeling there.  They noticed a large chunk of coral head broken off.  What is with people don't they know you are never supposed to touch or stand on the coral.  Coral reefs are disappearing all over the world. Pollution and abuse are killing them off faster than you know.  In fact many ocean communities have to build artificial reefs. I wish I had walked down the other day and gave a lesson in ocean etiquette. Well the kids and Harry did see a number of awesome fish and 2 nurse sharks.  I would have went with them but my lips are so sunburned I am reminded of the line from Napoleon Dynamite (the movie) can you bring me some chap-stick my lips hurt real bad.

The countdown is on we are are starting to make X's on the calender.  I can't believe how fast the time has gone.  Our naughty eldest son is still remaining incommunicado.  I sent him the guilt email this morning.  We know you are grown up son but we still love and worry about you.......

  1. Oh dear - you poor thing. ........I betcha chapstick costs a fortune down there too. Next time remember to get the SPF stuff.

Thats the one thing I wish I could have done while I was there - go snorkeling - but there will be other oceans and other trips. I'm glad the seas calmed down so that you could go out.

And people - what can I say, sigh. Part of the problem is that they are used to snorkeling in the more crowded places where the coral is already dead so they get in the habit of standing on the "rocks"....I saw a lot of that in Cozumel where so much of the close in reef is shallow and dead.

But for the record - I never ever touch the stuff - in fact - if it's shallow water I skip the flippers just to be sure I don't accidentally hurt anything.

  2. Geez Carol, as if there aren't enough friggin' problems in the world, you have start bitching about the coral reef! There is a real menace to society going on everywhere; Bears are defacating in the woods! Statistics are showing that this is producing massive quantities of greenhouse gases that will be the end of mankind by the year 2020. At least the coral reef will be safe after that!

  5. maybe next time yu can gently go to them and tell them the damage they are creating. Im sure they didnt know. maybe they didnt even know they were standing on coral. Sorry about the lips. i would imagine the salt water in the ocean would really hurt. Better tostay out.
